One of my greatest pleasures photographing nature and wildlife is sharing unique and unusual shots of stuff that would otherwise go unnoticed -or extinct. (It's much harder to let something go extinct if you've actually seen it!)
Okay so it occurred to me whilst enjoying this rare sighting, that to describe a pileated woodpecker to someone who had never seen one, would be a difficult thing to do.
It's about the size of a crow.....and looks a bit like.......a prehistoric flying creature from the pleistocene.
Well yea, but it's a woodpecker.
Most of us have seen woodpeckers.
This is........
a really, really strange looking woodpecker.
And it makes very VERY big holes in trees.
